Over 2000 years ago, the ancient Silk Road has been flourished for thousands of years and remains immortal. In 2021, the first Dunhuang International Fashion Week continued “the Modern Silk Road”. On October 16, a precious letter came from the Crescent Spring and camel bells rang in Mingsha Shan again!

The ancient Silk Road once elegantly and flourishingly linked ancient trade and cultural exchangebetween China and the rest of the world. In the 21st century, Chinese people have paved the modern “Silk Road” with the own wisdom and courage. Along the open road of “go-out” strategy, the first Dunhuang International Fashion Week emerged at the right moment. Chinese fashion stepped out her own “globalization” era from Yumenguan.

It is an open road for the oriental power to go to the world. The “Belt and Road” in current days is the in-depth integration road of economy and culturebetween the east and the west in the 21st century, the peaceful development road, and the brilliant road for Chinese nation to realize comprehensive renaissance. Dunhuang, as an important node city of the Silk Road, enjoys good reputation at home and abroad by holding the Silk Road (Dunhuang) International Cultural Expo every year. In 2021, another city name card of Dunhuang, Dunhuang International Fashion Week, made its official debut for keep spreading Dunhuang’s cultural symbols and cultural fashion of the great power.

The first Dunhuang International Fashion Week was instructed by China Garment Association, sponsored by Dunhuang City People’s Government, Jiuquan Culture,Sports, Radio, Film and Tourism Bureau, Dunhuang Culture and Tourism Group, and Dunhuang Mingsha Shan Crescent Spring Tourism Development Co., Ltd., and co-organized by Dunhuang Cultural Expo Affairs Center, Dunhuang Scenic Area Management Committee, and Dunhuang Culture,Sports, Radio, Film and Tourism Bureau. Dunhuang Silk Road Fashion Culture Development Co., Ltd., and Jiade Mingcheng(Beijing) Culture Technology Co., Ltd. were responsible for operation and execution. Media Center of CNTAC and SOWRAI Fashion Media Group took charge of scheme and support.

As the initiator, Dunhuang Culture and Tourism Group is a service provider of carrying forward Dunhuang culture and pusher of industrial development. By launching the first Dunhuang International Fashion Week, Dunhuang Culture and Tourism Group explored and resorted out the content and system for Dunhuang culture. Cooperated with the national scenic area and 5A scenic area Mingsha Shan· Crescent Spring, the industrial innovation platform based on Dunhuang culture has been created by virtue of fashion innovation and art publication.

Opening Show—Shaquan Yingyue

In the immersive mirror of the Crescent Spring, Mingsha Shan, Dunhuang of 2021, Shi Lin, the Member of standing Committee of Jiuquan Municipal Committee of CPC and Dunhuang Municipal Party member, Zhu Jianjun, the mayor of Dunhuang City People’s Government, Zhou Yiqi, the vice-chairman of China Garment Association, Zhang Zhaoda, the famous artist, fashion design master, and president of Oriental Costume Culture Committee of Chinese Oriental Culture Seminar, and Sun Xiaoqiang, the chairman of Dunhuang Culture and Tourism Group launched the first Dunhuang International Fashion Week.

Zhu Jianjun, the mayor of Dunhuang City People’s Government, gave an opening speech. Liu Bin, the vice-president of Lining Group, Liang Jiuzhang, the executive of Foley Shoes, Zhao Guangfeng, the deputy director of Subsidy Project Department of China Women Development Foundation, and Liu Xiangrong, the executive and general manager of Karce International Holdings Company Limited attended the opening ceremony. Nearly one hundred domestic and overseas media including Xinhuanet, CCTV net, China Daily, Guangmingnet, China Textile, Sina, Sohu, Phoenix, Bazaar, VOGUE, Art China, AMMA, and People of Europe have conducted special reports for the Fashion Week Opening Show. Dozens of media including China Network, Migu, Youku, Sina, Weizan, WASU TV, Bilibili, and Kwai conducted online synchronous live show, attracting millions of person times to watch and participate in it while interacting with Dunhuang in the cloud.

Mingsha Shan, camel team, the Crescent Spring, fashion, and art are flowing in a grand view of landscape. With flowing scenery, Zhang Zhaoda·Zhang Kaihui Art Show opened the prelude of the first Dunhuang International Fashion Week.

The winner of 2020 Beijing Fashion Week Forbidden City Design Contest—Zhang Kaihui took the first to regard “Dunhuang Trace” as the theme of the design to bring an aesthetic show of Dunhuang. Inspired by the historical process of repairing, reserving, and inheriting art works of Dunhuang Mogao Grottoes, Zhang Kaihui displayed Dunhuang art from the brand-new perspective and saluted to Dunhuang cultural relic researchers who show infinite contribution spirit to art. Zhang Kaihui took the natural texture formed by the passage of time on the surface of murals and statues in Dunhuang Mogao Grottoes and the action gestures formed by countless repairs by repairmen as her main concept; Taking Dunhuang relics as a reference, the use of pleated and classical instrument textured fabrics presented a scroll like design; Inspired by the digital inheritance of Dunhuang art, the recombined collage of black-and-white and color photos showed the inheritance of Dunhuang Art in the digital era.

As flourishing the national strategy of the “Belt and Road”, Zhang Zhaoda, the famous artist, fashion design master, and president of Oriental Costume Culture Committee of Chinese Oriental Culture Seminar came to Dunhuang again to perfectly integrate costume aesthetics with strong Dunhuang culture. The opening show started from Dunhuang in ancient times.With glossy silk fabrics, natural folds and shadows, it presented the inter-reflectionbetween the bright sky, desert and oasis under the sun. Through flexible and changeable tailoring, it drew the scene of wild wind and romance in the vast desert.

The second series regarded Zhang Qian’s Travel as the theme, in which the color has become deep and stable. The special lining texture and design with a strong sense of coverage could stand out those mysterious and lonely days when adventurers pass through wind and sand. The third series displayed the brilliant times of gathering the eastern and western civilization in Dunhuang. Folding, overlapping, drawstring, chain, and ribbon perform gorgeous costume landscape of the Silk Road. The fourth series regarded Mogao Grottoes—the treasure of Dunhuang as inspiration, selected black and dark blue as the main tone, and added brilliant golden for embellishment, integrated chiffon with multi-level overlapping design,to display the mysterious and solemn atmosphere in early-stage murals of Mogao Grottoes as a whole.

The final series of the show decomposed murals of Mogao Grottoes in the Tang Dynasty, selected abundant and colorful jacquard fabric with sapphire blue, mineral green, bright red, silver white, and golden yellow, and added embroidery, spun gold, bead, and diamond to display the flourishing grand view of the Tang Dynasty with the magnificent visual effect.

Zhang Zhaoda·Zhang Kaihui Opening Ceremony Art Show was shown in Mingsha Shan. Creative publication, immersive stage design, and art linkage with Wang Yalin, the vice-chairman of Jiuquan Fine Art Association and representative the intangible heritage inheritor of stone powder painting technique followed nature, showed unconstrained flexibility, and perfect matching of man and costumes.

Innovation of cultural creation fashion

In addition to splendid opening ceremony show, the first Dunhuang International Fashion Week will hold “Dunhuang Fashion” exhibition to display three major excellent works. “Dunhuang Fashion” Costume Design College Exchange Exhibition & T Stage Show will invite 3 well-known domestic costume design colleges and combine with the international popular trend to publicize and display in “Dunhuang International Fashion Week”.

Apart from excellent activities, the first Dunhuang International Fashion Week 2021 included the static exhibition and publication of the most popular cultural creative products in current days. 15 cultural creative products released this time were co-branded and designed by Zhang Zhaoda and Zhang Kaihui, including T-shirts, sweaters, handbags, back cushions, umbrellas, scarves, cups, neckties, and carpets, etc.

These unique cultural and creative products took the patterns used in the fashion show as the visual main body, modernized the totem carrying the profound history of Dunhuang, and applied more direct and more powerful visual effects to the items we commonly use in modern times.

Zhang Zhaoda selected the most representative pattern in Dunhuang murals. The gradual dissipation of totems and the superposition of matching color blocks not only try to preserve the integrity of historical totems, but also to be fashionable; Zhang Kaihui extracted the famous Buddha's-hand pattern in Dunhuang murals and endowed it with contemporary artistry bymonochromatized processing, adding the colortone to represent Dunhuang and redisplaying it with modern style of minimalism.
